Grinding teeth is more than just habit

You may occasionally grind, gnash or clench your teeth but if you do it frequently, you may have bruxism. Most people who have bruxism are not even aware of this condition. Often teeth grinding action occurs while we are asleep but for some people it can happen when they are awake.

Stress and anxiety is the main cause of bruxism but it can also be due to misaligned teeth, obstructive sleep apnea, sleep problems, excessive alcohol or even be hereditary. Bruxism is also common amongst children.

Teeth grinding can cause a host of issues:
  • Worn-down or loose teeth
  • Damaged dental restorations such as fillings
  • Sore jaw or neck muscles
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold things
  • Sleep disruption
  • Headache or earaches

If you think you might be grinding your teeth, speak to your oral health professional soon.

There are many treatment options:
  • Mouth guard or mouth splint
  • Stress management therapy
  • Good sleep routine
  • Muscle relaxant exercises
  • Cognitive behaviour therapy
